Back in 2013 I applied for and was accepted for one of the Unite Foundation bursaries. The difference this made to my university education was enormous.
A great weight was lifted of my shoulders, as I never had to worry about the cost of accommodation throughout my university years. My fees were taken care of with a student finance loan, and thanks to the Unite Foundation, my accommodation was secure for the duration of my studies. This had a massive impact on my time at university I was completely worry free and could apply all my concentration into getting my degree.
I am sure every student goes through times when they struggle a bit – you can have dips of confidence both academically and in yourself as a person. University life is just so different to being at school with all the new people – many with completely different backgrounds to my own. There’s the studying of course but there’s also the ‘adulting’ bit; managing money, cooking for yourself, keeping an eye on your CV.
I graduated with a 2.1, and am now moving to Newcastle to pursue a Masters. Also, successful completion of my undergraduate degree has secured me a competitive summer placement working with a local council in the area related to my Masters!
When graduation day comes it is such a mad rush to get everything ready that it’s only afterwards that I’ve really thought about it means to me. I am so proud of myself for getting here and it’s sometimes hard to remember the person I was before when I first set out on this adventure of university. University for me felt like a path of mini challenges – some daunting, some exciting – and as I get to the end I’ll be going through challenges again, but with another new path in front of me.
I will always be grateful to Unite for the assistance I received, and will credit them in part with my being able to complete my course. Thank you Unite Foundation.
