Unite Foundation

Daniel’s story

“Hi I’m Daniel, a Unite Foundation student at De Montfort University graduating in 2018 with a marketing degree.

There’s no doubt that any student would benefit from three years of rent-free accommodation and I’ve been really fortunate to be in the same flat over this period of time. It’s the first home I can call my own and I have built incredibly important friendships here.

The scholarship has given me so much more than a roof over my head, reliable wi-fi and a great study environment. The Foundation, in partnership with the university, has given me the chance to develop skills for my future career.

In 2016 I applied for a paid summer internship with Unite Students that had been ring fenced for Foundation students like me and I travelled to Bristol for an assessment day.

I didn’t get the job but rather than a standard rejection letter, I got detailed, professional, constructive feedback that I was easily able to put into practice. When it came to interviews for my placement year I was knowledgeable, practised, confident. …… and hired!

The small team at the Foundation are always there for you and come up with all sorts of opportunities that you’d never get otherwise that will improve your academic, social experience or job opportunities.”

I actually feel like I have true 'home' as I've lived in this one place for years now.
