Meet Our New Director…
Eluned Parrott joins the Unite Foundation as its first Director after a career in HE, politics and consultancy.
Beginning her career at the educational charity Techniquest, Eluned worked in student recruitment and widening access before establishing the Community Engagement Team at Cardiff University. On being elected to the National Assembly for Wales, Eluned was Welsh Shadow Minister with responsibility for the Economy, Science and Transport from 2011-2016. In that role she had responsibility for developing policy and advocacy in research, knowledge transfer and skills, publishing a paper on widening access to apprenticeships and fighting successfully for additional funding for part-time students and widening access in Wales.
“I am delighted to be joining the Unite Foundation at this exciting time, and look forward to helping to shape the next stage in our development.
“Education is a powerful tool for promoting social justice, but sadly for too many vulnerable young people, the barriers to getting on in life are still too great. It is a scandal that in our society, only 6% of care-leavers go to university. At the Unite Foundation, we want to make sure that those young people who don’t have the support of a caring family network can still have the chance to follow their dreams.
“No young person deserves to be written off, and yet so many of our most vulnerable young people are overlooked by others and losing faith in themselves. The challenge to turn that around is a huge one – but together with our partners, friends and colleagues in higher education and the third sector, I believe that the Unite Foundation can make a huge contribution to changing lives and in time, changing minds as well.”
Alongside her role at the Unite Foundation, Eluned is a member of the National Infrastructure Commission for Wales and a Trustee of the National Botanic Garden of Wales where she chairs the Marketing and Commercialisation Sub-Group. She is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and an Associate Member of the Institute of Directors.
